One of the largest repositories of scientific data in any discipline is the model-generated and observational geoscience data produced and used in climate science. The data volumes from climate modeling will continue to increase dramatically, and the interpretation of this data requires new approaches - we are entering the age of data-intensive science. Future climate data analysis requires a suite of new techniques interpreting and linking phenomena on and between different time- and length scales as well as realms and processes. Such tools could provide unique insights into challenging features of the Earth system, including extreme events, nonlinear dynamics and chaotic regimes....

- CMCC-CESM-NEMO Benchmark
CMCC–CESM–NEMO is the physical basis of the new CMCC (Centro Euro-Mediterraneo sui Cambiamenti Climatici) Earth System Model (CMCC-ESM). It is a global coupled climate model derived from the NCAR coupled model CESM, where the ocean component is NEMO rather than the NCAR ocean model. In CMCC-CESM-NEMO all the climate components (atmosphere, ocean, land and sea-ice) are fully coupled....
- Coupler Benchmarks
On the road to exascale, the performance of the coupling technologies is becoming a major challenge in weather and Earth System Models (ESMs). Different coupling technologies are used today to link ESM components (e.g. the atmosphere, oceans, land, sea ice, etc.) and although their implementations differ vastly, they typically carry out similar functions such as managing data transfer between two or more components, interpolating the coupling data between different grids, and coordinating the execution of the constituents....
- ICON Benchmark
The new generation unified weather forecasting and climate model ICON (ICOsahedral Non-hydrostatic model) is jointly developed by Max-Planck-Institut für Meteorologie and German National Meteorological Service, the Deutscher Wetterdienst (DWD). ICON employs triangular and hex-/pentagonal grids arising from iterative subdividing of the edges of the icosahedron (polyhedron with 20 triangular faces) mapped to the globe....

The ICON communication kernel focuses on the following features of the full model:
- Functionality to read ICON grid files.
- Grid decomposition controlled by namelist variables.
- Implements a library which should be usable by other ICON kernels with communication requirements....
- IPSLCM Benchmark
IPSLCM (IPSL Coupled Earth System Model) is a full earth system model. In addition to the physical atmosphere-land-ocean-sea ice model, it also includes a representation of the carbon cycle, the stratospheric chemistry and the tropospheric chemistry with aerosols. The benchmark includes sources, utilities and additional files required to run and check a short simulation. IPSL Coupled Earth System model benchmark is available for two different generations of IPSLCM: IPSLCM5 (2010-2015) and IPSLCM6 (2016-2019)....
- MPI-ESM1 Benchmark
MPI-ESM1 is a comprehensive global Earth System Model developed at the Max-Planck-Institut (MPI) für Meteorologie. MPI-ESM1 consists of component models ECHAM/JSBACH representing atmosphere, land surface, soil and vegetation and MPIOM/HAMOCC describing ocean, sea ice and ocean biogeochemistry.
