You may remember my parallel I/O talk at the 14th ECMWF HPC workshop. A proposal would be to start from this and start discussing a proper design, which would satisfy not only writing but as well reading and much more elaborate post-processing. I personally think that we have to stay as much as possible in memory and do not touch disks if possible. I think as a starting point this should be fine.
