F2008 compilers

Added by Anonymous over 12 years ago

I would like all hardware vendors to support fully compliant F2008 compilers as soon as possible.

OK this isn't going to happen this year, but I am hopeful that this could happen in 2012 or 2013.

The HPC world is talking of first ExaScale systems appearing in about 10 years time,
and I read that PGAS languages (Yelick et al.) are seen as the way forward for exascale
applications.

F2008 is the only language that supports PGAS (i.e. via coarrays) today that is a formal
standard. All the rest: X11, Titanium, UPC, Chapel (correct me if I am wrong) are vendor
specific languages and not ISO language standards.

I therefore propose that we should start lobbying our vendor compiler teams to support F2008.
